Search Engine Resource Center:

This is a short summary of things we've picked up regarding search engine placements which may include useful hints for your search engine optimisation strategy.

Inserting Meta Tags (Basics)

Go into the 'header section' of the HTML of each page on your web site:

<title>The Name of your site or page in here</title>
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="type in the keywords between the apostrophes here. Use keywords that are the highest likelihood of being searched. Try not to repeat the same word as search engines think you are spamming and will penalise your placement. Using less than 8 keywords is good.">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Put the description of the site here between the apostrophes. Keep it brief. Try to use a few keywords in your description.">
<meta name="author" content="Put the best keyword in here between the
apotrophes.">

Here is an example of how it looks from a standard page. This is the 'header' section.

<html>
<head>
<title>Johns Butcher Shop</title>
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Meat, sausages, home delivery, groceries">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Australian Home delivered fresh meats perfect for functions or occasions">
<meta name="author" content="Butcher Shop">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

</head>

Keywords

Do not use multiple repeated keywords. Try not to repeat the same keyword as search engines robots pick this up and penalise you in their ranking for this. Try to keep less than 8 keywords. The less the better in terms of ranking..If you have one keyword that matches a search exactly then the better.

NOTE:
Pure Flash web sites are extremely difficult to be spidered and therefore ranked by search engines. Search engines were designed to rank HTML sites so if possible add some key HTML pages to your web site if has been designed in flash or mix it up. Or provide a HTML equivalent / alternative.

Make sure that the alt text tag contains keywords for search engines. Some search engines use the also for ranking.

Submitting to Search Engines

We have several search engine submission services available. The first is the Express Booster which give you multiple submissions to 100 + search engines. This does not include the Prestige Search engines such as Yahoo or ninemsn or Looksmart. It is important to note that no search engine provides guarantees of listing and individual search engines have differing critieria to listing.

We recommend registering directly with the major search engines.

Submission can be free but this option may take months for evaluation and there is no guarantee of being listed. If you want to try a free submission each search engine normally has a link called "Add URL' or 'Submit a site' located at the bottom of their homepage or at the bottom of results pages. Many search engine including the Looksmart group no longer provide free listings.

Yahoo is not actually a search engine in the true definition of the term. It is a directory. Directories such as Yahoo actually physically look at your site when you submit it and evaluate the site in terms of quality, validity and popularity. Then they may or may not list you.

It is critical that your site is fully completed before submission. For the majority of search engines you get one good chance to rank well. Ensure that the site looks professional and presentable. ie ask yourself would you list it?? This may take a little time but is worth the effort.

We recommend using one of our paid submission services as you are guaranteed of being reviewed within 7 days and our professionals review and offer changes to your site prior to submission. Investment wise it is generally much less than your current advertising budget to list on the the Yellow Pages and many customers find that up to 50% of business leads are generated from the web.

Once you are listed keep monitoring your listing and your competitors listings. Note that the search engine will spider your site regularly for updates and you may need to change the Meta tags to alter your listing. Also make sure that you have keywords in the text of your actual site as these are crawled as well by search engine robots.
